Curator: Larry A. Ewashen, B.A., s.c., M.A.

Larry A. Ewashen has served since 1993 at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre (nee Doukhobor Village Museum). Since arriving here at the invitation of Pete Oglow, founder, many innovations have taken place resulting in a museum now considered as a world class facility.

Larry was raised north of Lundbreck, Alberta and attended University of Alberta in Edmonton. He later completed post graduate studies with an Honours Master of Arts from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

 


Larry Ewashen, Curator and Doukhobor Historian

Prior to immersing himself in museum work, throughout his career as writer, musician, theatre and film director and actor, he concentrated on the Canadian mosaic and the various facets of our rich, cultural heritage.

Curriculum Vitae:

1993-2005: Curator at the Doukhobor Village Museum; all duties involved in tourism, management etc., particularly special events.

1991-1992: Guest Curator and Tour Guide at National Doukhobor Heritage Village, Verigin, SK. Continued free lance work in writing and film.

1983-I990: Free lance work in theater and film, wrote two books, As The Crow Flew- A Look at the Pass[t] & Peter V. Verigin; An Appreciation.

1974-1983: Free lance work including production of major documentary, In Search Of Utopia - The Doukhobors, composing music for radio, theater and film.

1972-1974: Artistic Director and General Manager of Canadore College Theater Arts Program, Ontario. Included summer theater production and tours.

1971-1972: Acting and Technical Instructor at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto. Developed curriculum in the new department and also did freelance directing.

1970-1971: Artistic Director of Pinnacle Playhouse, Belleville, Ontario, created summer theater program for City Department of Recreation.

1969-1970: Director at Red Barn Theater, Artistic Director of Western Ontario Drama League, adjudicator for Dominion Drama Festival, workshops for Ontario Department of Culture.

1967-1968: Director; Royal Lyceum Theater & Traverse Theater, Edinburgh, Northcotte Theater, Exeter, UK.

1966-1967: Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, Honors Master of Arts.

1961-1966: Teaching, production and writing at ad agencies, CFTO Television, work on films and music including The Herring Belt, Cannes Film Festival winner.

1959-1960: Banff Center, student, assistant, then member of Showcase Acting Company.

1958-1961: University of Alberta, Bachelor of Arts degree.

Recent Work:

Received (joint) award on behalf of the the City of Castlegar and the Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society 'presented with our thanks and appreciation, in recognition of your outstanding commitment and service to the Doukhobor Village Museum' - co-presented by Mayor Mike O'Connor and Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo on April 24th 2005 .

[Following specific projects in addition to being full time Curator at the Doukhobor Village Museum which involves Archival Work, Specific Work Projects and Work Partnering, Tour Stimulation and Public Relations, Educational Programs, Documentary Film assistance and Research, and General Management.]

Currently administering work project under sponsorship of Human Resources Work Partnership at the Doukhobor Village Museum.

Curated and Mounted the Doukhobor Heritage Interpretation Rug Display in cooperation with the Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society and BC Heritage Trust.

Orchestrated and arranged Program for visit of Lieutenant Governor Garde B. Gardom to Doukhobor Village Museum.

Coordinated and staged various festivals in conjunction with the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Doukhobor immigration to Canada, events held at the Doukhobor Village Museum, Castlegar.

Assisted in Coordinating International Tolstoy Conference which took place in Tula, Russia, 1998, and involved forty scholars from seven countries.

Producer/Director of Program for visit of His Excellency Governor General Romeo Le Blanc, a specially orchestrated event for his visit to The Doukhobor Village Museum in 1997.

Coordinator and Director on the Doukhobor Centennial Coordinating Committee responsible for staging concerts, readings, a film festival, symposium and CBIE project in Russia which involved writing a play on the Doukhobor immigration at Yasnaya Polyana, the State Memorial Museum of Lev Tolstoy.

Workshop Organizer for Alexei Batalov, Oscar winning Russian film actor and director, presented Master Classes, Lectures and Workshops for a week in Vancouver.

Location Manager for the Film Unit of the Canadian Museum of Civilization for their exhibit on the Doukhobors. Selected and arranged for all of the specific shots over the work period.

The Last Hurrah, produced and directed documentary now shown on educational networks, libraries, schools etc. Concentrates on the preservation and collection of Doukhobor music.

Archival Consultant and Researcher, collected all Doukhobor recorded music in Canada since 1948 for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Also evaluated artifacts for museum collection.

Project Coordinator secured $140,000 Infrastructure grant which enabled construction of barn, market building and irrigation system at the Doukhobor Village Museum.

Museum Consultant facilitated acquisition of modules from Canadian Museum of Civilization, now featured at the Doukhobor Village Museum.

Co-authored and Published In Search of Utopia and various other historical books under the company Spirit Wrestlers Associates.

Special Appearances and Honours:

The following are examples of volunteer community/heritage work done in addition to regular work in the interests of 'Canadiana' and cultural and educational community work. In all of these cases, these were singular appearances and publications that were exclusive in nature.

 1) Lifetime Honourary Membership, Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society.
 2) Certificate from Parks and Recreation Division, BC, for contribution to the 'Preservation of BC  Heritage'.
 3) Major article in Spirit Wrestlers, Centennial Volume published by the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
 4) Major article in Canadian Ethnic Studies Journal, 1995.
 5) Major paper; Doukhobors and the Media, Learned Societies Conference, University of Calgary 1994.
 6) Major contributor to Iskra Magazine, the National news magazine of the Doukhobors in Canada.
 7) Publications placed in The Museum Folk Art, New York City.
 8) Ten years Coordinator at the Doukhobor Village Museum, Castlegar, work resulted in many Schools'  and Seniors' tours, major construction under the Infrastructure Program, produced a new Information  brochure, orchestrated events such as the Premier's visit, Governor General's visit, Work Partnership  Programs etc.
 9) Regular lecturer throughout the summer at Lemon Creek Lodge Elder Hostel, history and culture of the Doukhobors.
10) Feature speaker at International Conference and Tolstoy Symposium, University of Ottawa, guest speaker at Carleton University, Ottawa, topic: Contemporary Relationships between Tolstoy and the Doukhobors.
11) In cooperation with the library, placement of Doukhobor Studies printed material, videos, and other associated items in the Castlegar Campus of Selkirk College.
12) Recently completed a major collection of Doukhobor music (dating from 1947) and archival material for Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec.
13) Appearance at the University of Calgary Learned Societies Conference, presented survey paper on Doukhobors and the Media.
14) University of Ottawa Symposium on the Doukhobors 100 years - The Emerging Faces of Doukhobor Culture.
