The Doukhobor Discovery Centre was the happy recipient of a rare artefact recently.

Nick Barisenkoff was the donor of an original kettle which was used by the Kootenay Columbia Jam Preserving Works.

The Centre is very grateful for this rare item, and will be displaying it in the implement shed along with restored implements which are the result of the recent Implement Restoration initiative.

The once world-renown KC Preserving Works was indeed the heart of Brilliant, BC. The Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood first built the factory in 1915 and by 1927 it was expanded to house 24 kettles. The steam-heated copper kettles shown here were kept in immaculate condition, contributing to the output of 1,050 cans of jam and preservatives per hour - equaling 43,000 cases or 516,000 four-pound cans per year.

After the foreclosure of the C.C.U.B. in 1938, the factory was operated by the trustee until 1943 when it was completely and mysteriously destroyed by arson. Many were blamed for the devastation and there were many theories as to who caused it. However, no one was ever charged nor convicted for its demise. [From the 2007 Doukhobor Discovery Exhibit].
