Tolstoy is remembered not only for his masterpieces War and Peace and Anna Karenina, but also for his very modern and innovative philosophical and moral thoughts. He was in touch with world thinkers of the time and influenced Mahatma Gandhi and later Martin Luther King Jr. One of the key achievements of his life was saving the Doukhobors from annihilation and organizing and financially helping the migration of 7,500 of them to Canada in 1899.
