April
25 of 2010 will mark the 39th opening of
the Doukhobor Discovery Centre. From a modest beginning
in 1971 when it opened with one building, the Doukhobor
Discovery Centre has grown into a major tourist
and community attraction, now boasting a complete
traditional village.
The
Village Bistro is also nearby with its
examples of sumptuous Doukhobor food as well as
Canadian dishes and will commence serving the public,
tourists and tour groups on May 1st.
Sunday’s
program beginning at 1:00 will feature local politicians,
music, speeches, free tours and refreshments. This
year’s exhibits feature Leo Tolstoy, author
and humanitarian who assisted the migration of the
Doukhobors in their move to Canada in 1899. An example
of 90 villages which once existed throughout the
Kootenays, the Centre now portrays an important
part of our pioneering history as well as a vibrant
picture of the historical Russian roots.
