The Spirit of Youth Choir

Hello!

Just a little bit about the choir and our past year.
The Spirit of Youth Choir of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ, was originally known as the Kootenay Union of Youth Choir. We are a volunteer group of young Doukhobors varying in age from 16 - 30 years. The energetic group gathers twice a week in rehearsal for live performances at annual USCC events throughout the year. In addition, we perform at other events and functions upon invitation. Gathering together not only enables us to practise and learn a part of our culture through song, but also provides an atmosphere or base from which friendships develop.

The past 1993/94 season has been memorable in many ways - happy and sad. The year started full of enthusiasm and excitement. The choir also had one of the larger memberships we had seen in a number of years. We learned some challenging songs for the Christmas season and went full steam ahead enjoying our preparations for our skit, a musical comedy to be performed for the upcoming talent nights.
What a shock to find out about the death of one of our first year choir members, Jolene Ozeroff. She was in a fatal car accident the morning of the very day we would be presenting our skit. At the same time another choir member was fighting for his life at the hospital. Only with the encouragement of Jolene's family and closest friends were we able to file on stage that night and, in lieu of our skit, sing two songs in her memory ... a moment we will never forget. Fortunately, our other choir member recovered and is back singing in choir. Individually and collectively we had to continue on with our, lives. After the 47th Annual USCC Union of Youth Festival (at which time we successfully presented our skit) we undertook a project to make this recording in memory of Jolene. The majority of the songs on this recording are those that we were preparing with Jolene for that upcoming talent night. In addition to this project, we were invited to perform at the closing ceremonies of the Harbour Festival at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, B.C. What an opportunity! Of course we went.

We had a busy summer and did complete both projects. Indeed a memorable year. Not only a year of memories, but also a year of learning. The learning, memories and experiences all shaping, us into who we are and who we will be. And throughout, we had a good time because of such dedicated people in our choir.

A special thank you to everyone who financially supported this project in memory of Jolene. Thanks to all the choir members and the choir committee members who have volunteered much time and energy. We appreciate our families and the parent organization of our choir, the USCC, for supporting us in our adventures. Thank you to each and every one of you who have helped, supported and encouraged us along our way.

Thanks! We love you!

Jolene Ozeroff   1977-1994

In the short period of time that people knew Jolene, each person gained at least one precious memory of her. "Some will carry these memories with them for the rest of their lives but others may only remember them briefly. She loved many things, which included her family and friends, sports, and especially singing. Her powerful voice could be easily heard among the choral and in various trios and duets. Jolene was admired and treasured by everyone who knew her. Determination and dedication were her greatest virtues, as well as that unpredictable sense of humor. Her sense of humor is one of the many things our Spirit Of Youth Choir will never forget. Sadly missed, her memory will be carried with us forever. The title of our recording is taken from Jolene's favourite song in choir "To you, Jolene, we dedicate all of these songs . . . with love."
