The Nelson Ladies Doukhobor Choir was first organized in 1968 by Mrs. Hazel Samorodin, and has since been very active in the district. They have entertained senior citizens at Mt. St. Francis Hospital, Willowhaven, and Raspberry Lodge. They have performed many times at Notre Dame University in Nelson for the Rotary Club banquet, International Night, Multifusion, and others. They have entertained groups, such as the Bar Association, the Soroptimists, etc. They have taken part in most Talent Nights in Castlegar, Festivals at Grand Forks, à Music Festival in Nelson, à program of Christmas Carols in the Civic Theatre, recorded some programs of singing for radio, and officially opened the Nelson Diamond Jubilee program in 1972, for which they received à Certificate of Merit from the city of Nelson. A lot of their singing has been recorded on tape by Peter Offerman, of Nelson, including the ones for radio and the local museum. Most recently this choir performed for the Women's Institute Convention in Nelson, where over 300 women delegates were in attendance. At the Kootenay Folkfest, held in Nelson on June 21 to 23, the choir was chosen from among all other participants for an expense-paid trip to the Provincial Folkfest at Vancouver, held on July 7, 1974. |
