Origin of psalms

Just as the origin of the Doukhobors is shrouded in mystery, so it is with the origin of the psalms. Some theories suggest that the elongated words and phrases were formed deliberately so they were incomprehensible to government spies who were ferreting out heretics, a crime punishable by hanging. This punishment later evolved into a more convenient penalty of exile to the far reaches of the empire. By the late 1700s The Living Book emerges with a flexible collection of psalms and hymns, as opposed to the Bible which was considered as static and frozen. The Living Book, in the oral culture, was based on memory and thus, on day to day use, and children were encouraged to begin learning the psalms, prayers and hymns from an early age. Various elders and members of the community contributed to this collection. An early psalm explains the role of the singing of prayers and hymns within the commune:

PSALM 91.

Singing of Psalms is an adornment to our souls. To call angels for help means that they will repel darkness, that they will create a temple for a man to strengthen his mind, that they will make amends for one's sins. It is like the grace of the saints; it adds to one's faith, hope and love; it covers one with light like the sun. It cleanses one with the water, it burns one's sins like fire, it covers one with holy oil. It puts the devil in one to shame and makes one aware of God. It soothes in one carnal desires. Holy oil means mercy, a symbol of happiness. It is like selecting a group of angels to drive away ferocity, to pacify all kinds of anger, to shatter wrath. The glory of God is eternal. Singing the Psalms is like honey. Psalms are selected before God. They drive away all sins. They form a union of love, give you power of observing and strength of fulfilling and a way of obtaining. It all indicates a great soul. It cleanses one's lips and makes one's heart glad. It constructs a high pillar; it enlightens the man. It opens one's feelings; it destroys all evil in one. To the ones who have perfection it shows the way. He who has memory and love, has also fear of God. The glory of God will not be lost anywhere. It shall rejoice later before God. Serenity of the mind is a herald of peace. The Psalms express prayer for future generations; they bring their offering an behalf of the present generations, to do penance for the past generation, and rejoice an account of good deeds. They shall recall the joy of the Kingdom of heaven. Singing in turn many Psalms musters the truth against the forces of the devil. It shows the true light. To the elders it is the sign of comfort. To the young it is an improvement of their mind coming from Christ, our God. Psalms establish God's work through the prophets of old and teach us always to pray. Glory and honour be to Him; greatness, good will, radiance, wisdom and gratitude, for He is strong and powerful.

Glory be to our God

In the years immediately following their 1899 arrival in Canada (Assiniboia Territory as their first 'home' destination), the Doukhobors endured many hardships. In just a few years though, after the over 7,500 Doukhobors had cultivated their hard-worked lands(and coincidentally right after these lands had become profitable and rich in harvest), the Dominion of Canada abandoned the Hamlet Clause, the initial condition of immigration, and proceeded to enforce the Homestead Act. The new Minister of the Interior, Frank Oliver, successor to the sympathetic Clifford Sifton, insisted that the Doukhobors not only cease communal life as they were previously guaranteed, but according to the Homestead Act, each must take out individual homesteads and must swear an oath of allegiance to the King and thus become Canadian citizens. Not only were these new dicta contrary to the preceding government's guarantees, but they were contrary to the very religious principals to which the Doukhobors so devoutly adhered.

Beginning in 1908, more than five thousand Doukhobors migrated from Saskatchewan to BC as a result of governmental seizure of their hard-worked lands. The selections performed in this website and upcoming historic CD & DVD were just a few of the psalms that reflected their faith, and gave them spiritual courage through these arduous times.
